LED wall art: a canvas and a light in one

LED wall art, also called an LED canvas, a light-up canvas or simply an LED picture, is a printed canvas with LEDs set into the design. Switched off, it's a bold picture. Switched on, parts of the image glow: a lion's crown, a tiger's glasses, the headlights of a supercar. How to choose the right size

Size decides whether a piece looks like a statement or an afterthought. Measure the wall, or the furniture it will hang above, and use this as a guide to the longest side:

• Up to 65cm, such as 43 x 63cm or 64 x 64cm: hallways, bedside walls and smaller spaces.
• 66 to 85cm, such as 63 x 83cm or 83 x 83cm: above a desk, a bed or a two-seater sofa.
• 86 to 95cm, such as 63 x 93cm or 93 x 63cm: the main living room wall, a home bar or a games room.
• 96cm and over, such as 100 x 100cm: large LED wall art for a feature wall or above a three-seater sofa.

Portrait pieces suit narrower walls and alcoves. Landscape pieces sit well above sofas, beds and sideboards. Every product page lists the exact dimensions, including depth, and most pieces sit 3 to 4cm off the wall.

Where to hang LED wall art

• Living room: the natural home for it. The lighting does most of its work in the evening, so hang it in your line of sight from the sofa.
• Bedroom: a softer glow than a lamp and a far better view than a blank wall. A battery piece keeps cables off the bedside.
• Home bar, games room or man cave: where the neon palettes and bolder characters come into their own.
• Home office: a motivational piece behind the desk works in the room and on video calls.

Keep it out of bathrooms, damp rooms and outdoor spaces, and clear of radiators and direct sunlight, which fade prints and shorten the life of any electrical item.

Every piece runs on one of two power types, and nothing needs hard-wiring. The badge on each product photo tells you which one it uses.

• USB powered LED wall art plugs into a standard USB plug or port, or runs from a USB powerbank. The easy choice for a wall near a socket and for switching on every evening.
• Battery powered LED wall art needs no cable at all, so it can hang anywhere, including walls with no socket nearby. The batteries need replacing from time to time.

Is LED wall art safe to leave on?

The LEDs run on low voltage, from USB or batteries, and stay no more than warm to the touch. LEDs turn most of their power into light rather than heat, which is also why they last: LED components are typically rated for tens of thousands of hours of use.

Treat it like any other electrical item. Don't cover it while it's on, switch it off when you go out, and keep it away from water and heat sources.
